I thought I'd place this here rather than Hawkes' folder because it's more of a general confusion than just him.

1) I've seen Hawkes billed as a detective. However, he was a medical examiner not a police officer so even if he joined the department and went through the academy (which I somehow doubt) he wouldn't automatically become a detective.

2) If he's not a detective then do CSI's not have to be cops. The NY guys definitely are they have uniforms, are called detective and talk about their time at the academy but if I remember rightly some of the Vegas crew (Grissom?) aren't cops so how does that work.

3) Adam Ross. He's a criminalist (I got a good look at his ID badge from Snow Day) and he mostly works as a lab tech and yet sometimes (as in Snow Day) he processes scenes like a CSI. What exactly is he? He's not a cop.

I tried googling but it's too confusing. Anybody know anything? :)

I don't think they're actual CSI's, because they don't do any investigating. I think they're hired as scientists to work in the lab and sometimes get called out to crime scenes to help process on site to better preserve evidence and possibly pick up on things the CSI's would miss or don't specialize in.

Oh right well that explains Adam. Cheers :D

Hawkes is still a mystery. Mind you the whole world of CSI is really condensed down as the lead detectives wouldn't do all the stuff that they do apparently. Well that's what I got for googling CSI anyway.

No, you're totally right. I've done some research because I've been trying to put together a fanfic and so much stuff in the show is kind of shaky lol I kinda let it go just because I love the show so much. The only thing that bugs me is there are two jurisdictions within Manhattan, everything outside of Central Park and, adversely, everything within it. However, our team on the show handles both on a regular basis. In real life they wouldn't be allowed to go in to the park because there's a whole other department set aside for those cases.
