My big TV chance
Sschoolgirl Charlotte Hughes has got a TV break at the first attempt.
And in a few weeks' time the Wigan 16-year-old will begin making regular appearances in a post-watershed spin-off of the popular teen soap Hollyoaks.
The Whelley youngster is hoping it is the latest rung on the ladder to a career in acting which began with performances in school and recently advanced when she joined the acclaimed Willpower Youth Theatre Company in Wigan.
In fact her signing up to Hollyoaks in the City contributes to a bumper year for Willpower which currently has many other of its talented youngsters making their marks on telly.
Amy Lythgoe is set to appear in a new action show called The Outsiders following three previous roles in major TV dramas. Michael Lawrence recently appeared in Life on Mars and is soon to have a key role in Heartbeat.
Jake Wilson is to be the new face of Werther's Original Toffee ads.
And three other Willpower "kids" ? Carley Stenson, Sam Darbyshire and Ashley Davies ? are already familiar to Hollyoaks viewers.
Willpower co-director Caroline Joynt said: "We have long seen our young members go into television ? Hollyoaks has had at least one Willpower teenager in it since it started ? but I reckon we are enjoying a purple patch at the moment and Charlotte's is one of a number of pleasing TV deals."
Standish High School student Charlotte is currently in the middle of her GCSEs but has managed to fit rehearsals and filming in around revision and exams after giving understanding producers her timetable.
She is set to appear in eight episodes of the 20-part series beginning in August.
She says her character, Lauren, is a typical teenage girl who commands respect from her peers as one of a rather unpleasant gang.
Charlotte said: "It isn't the part I actually went for but it is still a good role and I get more lines as the series goes along.
"Lauren isn't a bad girl but people are scared of her and she gets respect for the wrong reasons.
"I have really enjoyed the experience so far ? it is completely new to me with the cameras and people fussing round you in the make-up chair. I hope it leads to more work.
"With luck I can go to Winstanley College after my GCSEs and then I am hoping to go to The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.."
Willpower's drama summer schools are now being organised. Three one-week courses run by professional actors will be held on July 31, August 14 and August 21. For an application form ring 01942 49833. Courses cost ?60.
